Hornsey & Wood Green's CLP selection news

Given that Nilgun Canver only stayed on as Labour's Lead Member on Community Safety by a tiny one-vote majority, it seems her attempt to replace Lynne Featherstone as Hornsey and Wood Green's next MP is dead in the water.

Hunter is informed that the early favourite is photogenic Cllr. Catherine West, Opposition Leader on Islington Council. To be fair to her, she led her party out of the wilderness in Islington in a year which was universally considered dire for Labour in London. Many Labour members think they'll lose the next election nationally but win locally. Hunter is of the view that Hornsey and Wood Green couldn't do any worse than Lynne Featherstone...

Peter Drusiotis, the former councillor for Alexandra ward, is reported to have torn-up his Labour membership card after they imposed an all-women shortlist. He had made big donations before the AWS was introduced (clearly hoping for 'dividends'). Ouch!

I take it that the picture is of Catherine West, not Nilgun Canver? She certainly looks just the sort of sensible, middle-class young woman to 'cut it' amongst the voters of H&WG _ and no dangly earrings! And she has the advantage of NO association with Haringey Council! Any association with that bunch of spiteful incompetents must be the kiss of death for any Labour parliamentary hopeful in the west of the borough.

Labour will not win Hornsey and Wood Green. if they managed to throw away a 10,000 majority, they never win it back in a natioanlly bad year.

....who knows how long the Featherstone honeymoon will last? She does seem to be as thickly coated with Teflon as Tony Bliar!

Featherstone appears to at least have the makings of a sense of humour, unlike the ghastly Roche.

Justin I would like to remind your readers that the Labour surge in the 2006 electoral results in Islington was at least partially due to a resurgent local Conservative Association as well a national Conservative increase in popularity.

I did mention this to Emily Thornberry MP who didn't want to acknowledge it but some Labour Party aides in Islington have agreed.

If Catherine West is selected then I wonder if her attention will wane from Islington Council?

Very possible, but the council elections are three years off. Nationally, the 'fat One' shoyuld be home and dry given that the lame Fox is standing again.

Sometimes I don't think people are fair about Lynne. Blinded by political hatred they don't look at the person. She is actually very nice and good company. She cares about people and her constituents.
On the doorstep people like her. I've been canvassing with her several times, it's fun. A real people person even Labour & Tories voters treat with her with respect. She has the wow factor.

She's is definitely one of the best LibDem MP's

Don't really think Labour will regain this seat. Saying that have to admit the Labour PPC Catherine West is also a very amenable person with a nice nature.

Catherine is indeed a very amenable person.

She also tends to come across as a bit of a lightweight, someone who knows you have to bang on doors but doesn't know you have to be able to use your brain. Bit like Lynne in that respect.

It wasn't Catherine who was responsible for the Labour near-triumph in Islington - the Labour campaign was shambolic.

It was Steve Hitchins, the pompous and arrogant Liberal Democrat leader there.

I've been following this race closely and I actually think that Jan Etienne's going to win.
