The Great Global Warming Swindle?

Like most urban liberals (with a small 'l'), I bought into the Green Agenda long ago. I freely admit, it's a trendy bandwagon which it is politically wise to jump on. Organic good, GM bad. Andrex bad, Sainsbury's recycled bog roll good. No questions asked until, that is, last night.

Channel Four presented an hour and a half documentary - The Great Global Warming Swindle. Eminent scientists from around the world explained how global warming (and cooling) have all been experienced before throughout the earth's history. They also explained how rises in CO2 FOLLOW rises in global temperatures, and don't precede or cause them. In fact, the Sun is responsible! Activity on the surface of the sun correlates extremely closely with global temperatures – and atmospheric CO2 levels do not. They didn't just point out the correlation, they explained the causal chain too (a bit complicated to go into here).

Admittedly, CO2 is a greenhouse gas - but its effects on global temperature are so marginal as not to matter. And even when you do consider CO2 levels, the amount that man produces is paltry compared with the CO2 which nature herself produces: the sea generates a huge amount; dying vegetation from leaf-fall contributes a lot more.

So, how did we all get sold a pup? There were a number of reasons:

1) Margaret Thatcher was worried about energy security: she didn't trust the Middle East not to turn off the oil taps at some point; and she didn't trust the NUM to keep digging sufficient coal out of the ground. Hence her love of nuclear power. And, apparently, when she first heard about this obscure, not very credible theory called 'anthropogenic’ global warming' she seized on it as an excuse to push nuclear power.

2) The old US-hating, anti-capitalist Left had seen their social and economic theories completely discredited in the former Soviet Union and eastern Europe, and were looking for a handy pretext to keep bashing their old enemy. The Founder of Greenpeace told us how the Far-Left has hijacked the organisation.

3) Huge numbers of academic and NGO careers have come to be built upon this spurious fad. The examples cited were too numerous too mention - including the disgraceful corruption of the scientific peer review process by the UN and others.

One scientist said that people who question global warming are viewed in the same light as Holocaust-deniers. Death threats are routinely made against these renegade scientists and their staff, who dare to challenge the Liberal/Left global warming orthodoxy.

Remember, the issue is not whether the earth is warming: it may well be. The point is that it is not caused by the CO2 emitted by human development - it is not caused by MAN! So there is no earthly reason to allow these New Age Luddites to lecture us about switching lightbulbs, driving smaller cars etc. We may need to build better flood defences, avoid building on flood plains - but it has nothing to do with CO2. It may be sensible to drive cars with smaller, more efficient engines, but do it to save money and to reduce our dependency on oil from an unstable part of the world - not because of CO2!

Once upon a time the Green Agenda was broad-based: it very sensibly opposed things like lead in petrol, dumping of dangerous waste, pollution of seas and rivers and so on. We now need people like David Cameron to help rescue the Green Agenda from the neo-Marxists who are using the 'Environment' to shut down capitalism and spread their evil ideology. And these people (often middle-class and white) want people to return to or stay in peasant environments. They do not want poor countries to develop. (Remember how in this country the Left always preferred their working class to be gritty and grim and hated it when they got all 'upwardly-mobile'? Now they have turned their attention to poor Africans. The result is to trap desperately needy people in a cycle of disease, famine and death by barring them from using their own natural resources - i.e. coal and oil.

These global warming fanatics are "anti-human", in the eyes of one of the contributors. One African doctor more or less told these eco-cretins where to shove their solar system. Good for him!

The programme certainly made me wake up, ask questions and study the scientific data available.

Hope you were tuned in, soi-disant eco-warrior Emma Jones!

I also saw the programme, Justin, and I thought it was a brave and excellent challenge to the current orthodoxy.

I would not describe myself as a climate change denier, but as a scientist myself I deeply mistrust the bandwagon that has mysteriously and suddenly built up on this issue. The science is complicated and not clear-cut; politicians are trying to manipulate the science for their own ends.

In my career to date I have spent quite a lot of time visiting remote parts of 3rd world countries, especially China. As the African academic said, denying these countries the right to go through the carbon-intensive stage of their development would have extremely severe consequences for both them and ourselves. In China even a moderate slowdown of economic growth could well precipitate some kind of sudden political revolution, which could be very dangerous and destabilising for the whole world.

...and following the link at the bottom of your post, I ventured out of interest onto the website of Cllr Emma Jones.

Since when did we start to employ teachers whose subject is "ethnic minority identity"? Call me old fashioned but I would far rather sack the likes of Emma Jones and use the money to hire some extra maths, english, science, foreign language or history teachers instead. No wonder so many children leave school with such a bad level of education these days.

Good post, Justin. I am just disappointeed at how few people I have spoken with today seem to have seen it.
We must spread the word!
I hope the CO2 climate change zealouts are forced to engage with the arguments in the program, rather than just blithely ignoring the inconvenient truth.
I agree too, with Kevin, that there are too many people in our schools (and hospitals and town hals) doing complete non-jobs and leaching off the rest of us. Can't they find something useful to do instead?

of course I meant 'Leeching' !

Couldn't agree more, Kevin!

I'm kicking myself for missing this, I'm hoping it will be repeated somewhere or maybe I can watch a tape of it. I have booked to see Nigel Calder, one of the contributers to last night's programme, speak in Cambridge next month. There are always sceptics on any controversial issue, figures and data can be manipulated. Having met scientists who have been to the Arctic and seen global warming in action, I would like to see them face the sceptics head on and hold a debate on this subject.

David Allen said...

Hi Ellee, re. those 'arctic scientists' _ I've no doubt they are telling the truth. There may be evidence of global warming, but, if it ain't caused by CO2 emissions our public policy response has been totally misguided. We would need to prepare to mitigate the EFFECTS of global warming, rather than wrecking economies and holding back progress in a futile attempt to prevent it.

Oh come on Justin that has hardly figured a lot in Green politics quite aside from being ancient history Nuclear Power is clean and I wouldn`t swing from being a fawning acolyte to a born again cynic to quickly

2) The old US-hating, anti-capitalist Left had seen their social and economic theories completely discredited in the former

Well again not really its more been a way of selling a number of disparate taxes and state controlling measures but I don’t think it is a conspiracy in quite that sense. Government in this country has been characterised by drift and slither rather than principle.

Well I have been saying …..

contributors. One African doctor more or less told these eco-cretins where to shove their solar system. Good for him!

( see my blog ages and ages ago)

The rest of what you say I heartily agree with and would like to formally welcome you to the Conservative party. It almost makes me misty eyed seeing you taking those first wobbly wilderbeast steps away from mother Liberalism.

So what are you doing for national Conservative Green day then . I `m following David Cameron and spending about £250,000 greening my house and cycling with a Bentley carrying my briefcase , in tow. I would like this policy rolled out to the estates ………mmmmmph sorry laughed a bit

Great post, that documentary was fantastic.

Loved the bit about Margret Thatcher. How delicious it is that the massed ranks of Guardianistas now have to look to dear old Maggie as the founder of the modern anti-CO2 movement!

For those who did not see the documentary: it is being repeated this coming Monday (12th) at 10pm on More 4 (okay if you have cable _ and Freeview?)
I'm sure no-one on the eco-left would like to acknowledge Mrs T as the 'godmother' of their movement _ most probably don't even know of her 'role' _ but she obviously meant all this to drive people into the arms of nuclear power (which, at the time was 'death' _ remember all those 'Atomic power - no thanks!' stickers?. But it didn't work, did it? The unintended consequence of her actions seem to have been to give the Left an excuse to attack business, private transport, etc.

I thought that they used stats very well, but the main basis of their argument was that man was only responsible for a small % of CO2 emmissions so it is not our fault. I thought they missed the point about the "tipping point", and that although man only has to take blame for a small %, it might just be the % that takes us over.

However, all those who disagree with the whole globla warming proposition are still ignoring one major problem, and that is that fossilt fuel reserves are finite. We will need an alternative, and if we choose to do this much more quickly than the rest of the world, we will be also be less dependent on Russian gas and Iranian oil.

Isn't that a good enough reason in itself ?

David Allen said...

Norfolk Blogger, energy security is a good enough reason to go for much of the environmental agenda, as you say. But, if we are motivated by a false premise (that global warming is man-made) we will get much of the policy wrong _ the green lobby has been hijacked by people with the wrong agenda. If all efforts go into people reducing their carbon footprint when this is an irrleevance, people will be distracted from doing the things they should be doing. If the science of this documentary is right then many of the current policy initiatives are completely midguided..

Regards the science as a starting point this website refutes many of the points in the 'documentary' and points you in the direction of further info.

Anybody checking out the above link by James would also do well to read it in conjunction with this article Apocalypse My Arse.

This topic has become as divisive as religion. I'm hoping to catch up with the programme on More4 tonight, and have also ordered Al Gore's film An Inconvenient Truth, I shall think carefully about them both before my next post on this subject.
